At Koley Jessen, our focus has always been helping clients solve problems, make confident decisions, and move forward with clarity. Artificial intelligence is simply one more way we deliver on that commitment. We view AI as a practical tool that enhances the work our people do every day—helping us work more efficiently, deepen our analysis, and bring additional clarity to complex matters.

Not only do our clients benefit from these improvements, but this also allows us to dedicate more time to the strategic and insight-driven aspects of our work — the areas where our clients receive the greatest value.

We recognize that the use of AI in legal work raises important considerations around confidentiality and data security, and we take these responsibilities seriously. While we embrace innovation, we do so thoughtfully. We adopt new technology in ways that support rather than replace the professional judgment and personal attention our clients value.

Our Commitment to Responsible, Secure Use of AI

We have a firmwide policy that guides the ethical, secure, and responsible use of AI across our practice. It helps us balance innovation with appropriate guardrails around confidentiality, data privacy, accuracy, professional standards, and our firm values. Our use of AI is grounded in two essential principles:

  1. Human Oversight
AI supports early-stage analysis, drafting, and review, but attorneys supervise all legal work and verify every AI-generated output before it is used or shared.
  2. Secure, Approved Platforms
Client and confidential information is only processed through vetted, firm-approved AI systems that meet our expectations for privacy and security.

Together, these principles ensure that our adoption of AI strengthens the quality, consistency, and reliability of our work.

How We Use AI Today

We use several established AI tools across our practice and continually assess new technologies to understand how they might support our teams and benefit our clients. We actively welcome input from employees and pilot new tools on a case-by-case basis to determine whether they add meaningful value to our legal work.

Not only do we help clients understand the opportunities and challenges presented by AI through our Artificial Intelligence practice, but we are also using AI internally to improve efficiency, reduce turnaround times, and enhance the overall client experience.

Below is a high-level overview of the platforms we use today and the types of tasks they support.

Harvey

Harvey is our primary legal-focused AI platform and is used across many of our practice areas. It supports a range of tasks including:

Westlaw Precision

Through Westlaw’s AI-assisted research capabilities, our attorneys can analyze complex legal questions more efficiently. These tools accelerate issue-spotting and help us deliver timely, well-supported insights.

Microsoft Copilot & 365 Copilot

We use both versions of Copilot across the firm.

For non-confidential work, Microsoft Copilot assists with idea generation, education, and drafting, helping our teams think through concepts more quickly and develop early written material.

For confidential workflows, 365 Copilot allows team members to securely analyze documents, summarize meetings and web content, prepare for upcoming matters, create action-item lists, review and draft emails, and manage a variety of organizational tasks within Microsoft 365 — helping our teams work more efficiently and stay consistent in the tools they already use every day.

Clause

Koley Jessen partnered with Clause in the development of this Microsoft Word add-in and is an active user of the technology. Clause helps legal teams review, redline, and draft agreements more efficiently by allowing attorneys to generate or revise clauses, apply customized playbooks, and analyze documents directly within Word using explainable AI.

If you’re interested in learning more about this technology, you can visit Clause’s website.

How Our AI Use Translates into Client Savings

AI is rapidly advancing, and quantifying client-facing savings can be challenging at this early stage. Even so, we have already observed tangible benefits across a number of matters, including reduced billable time, faster turnaround, and more focused attorney attention on strategic issues. Below are a few real-world examples from recent transactional engagements.

We will continue empowering our team with the knowledge and resources needed to make thoughtful use of AI — always aligned with our culture of continuous improvement and the practical, client-focused approach that defines our work.
