Taylor Hayes Recognized as Outstanding Law Student Advocate by Nebraska State Bar Association

May 2020 | Awards & Recogntion

The Nebraska State Bar Association (NSBA) and Volunteer Lawyers Project (VLP) recognized seven Nebraska law students (now alumni), including our own Associate, Taylor Hayes, through their new Outstanding Law Student Advocate Award.

In April, the NSBA & VLP initiated a new award for law students making significant contributions to the Tenant Assistance Project (TAP), an eviction defense project that launched in Lancaster County on April 1, 2020. Students who received the “Tenant Assistance Project—Outstanding Law Student Advocate” Award exhibited exemplary efforts in support of TAP by going above and beyond expectations in their effort to support the program and contribute to its success.

The NSBA recognized students retroactively for their participation in TAP in 2020.

Taylor Hayes, ’20, and Hannes Zetzche, ’20, were named co-recipients for the Spring 2020 semester for their contributions in the development of the Tenants Assistance Project. The team developed the process and forms that would be required to facilitate a program like TAP. They attended several hearings to observe the eviction process in Lancaster County and attended numerous meetings with housing advocates across the state and nationally. They also conducted a significant amount of research on the feasibility of the program and into the relevant laws and rules applicable to evictions. Hayes and Zetzche were the first student attorneys to participate in the TAP program.

Hayes' receipt of the award was also featured in the May/June issue of The Nebraska Lawyer, which can be viewed at the link below.
