With a focus on representing high-net-worth individuals and families, Mitch Hiatt provides tailored tax, estate planning, and trust and estate administration counsel. He has extensive experience in designing and implementing sophisticated wealth transfer planning strategies and also routinely advises clients on business succession planning matters.

Mitch counsels clients on charitable planning matters, including the design and implementation of charitable trusts. He also regularly advises public charities, private foundations and charitable trusts in obtaining tax-exempt status, and on issues relating to governance, tax, and compliance matters.



  • Basic estate planning matters, including the preparation of wills, revocable trusts, durable powers of attorney and advance directives, and assisting with asset titling and probate avoidance techniques
  • Sophisticated wealth transfer planning strategies, including dynasty trusts, grantor retained annuity trusts, irrevocable life insurance trusts, and the utilization of family LLCs and limited partnerships in connection with such trusts
  • Business succession planning matters, including buy-sell planning and pre-liquidity event planning
  • Advising tax-exempt entities and charities on a variety of governance and tax matters, including formation issues, obtaining tax-exempt status, prohibited transactions, self-dealing issues, excess business holdings, and unrelated business income tax
  • Charitable giving matters, including the design and implementation of a variety of charitable trusts
  • Federal and state tax controversies
  • Preparation and review of gift tax returns and estate tax returns
