Overview
James Cann’s litigation and dispute resolution practice focuses on civil, commercial, and family law. For nearly two decades, he has appeared as lead counsel for businesses and individuals to pursue or defend cases that require thorough preparation and careful trial presentations on complex issues to judges and juries.
In addition to having extensive experience handling lawsuits involving business, contracts, negligence, insurance, real estate, construction, bankruptcy, workers compensation, and other issues, his practice includes advocating for clients in family law cases involving divorce, separation, property division, custody, and estate and probate proceedings. He also regularly represents commercial and residential property owners in tax valuation protests and appeals. James’ skill in getting disputed matters resolved, either by trial, mediation, or arbitration, has proven to be valuable to many clients over the course of his career.

Property Valuation, Commercial & Civil Litigation
- Lead counsel at Tax Equalization and Review Commission on business park valuation dispute resulting in $25 million in valuation decreases
- Defeated jurisdictional challenge made in property tax appeals and obtained valuation reductions in excess of $$6.6 million
- Obtained millions in combined property tax valuations reductions for commercial property owners
- Defense of workers compensation claims
- Secured drainage improvements and damages favoring commercial building owner damaged by unlawful displacement of diffused surface waters.
- Defeated class certification in nationwide telecommunications class action lawsuit
- Obtained dismissal of food product labeling class action claim
- Represented excess insurer in connection with mass tort litigation claims brought against product manufacturer
- Obtained $1.3 million jury verdict in commercial fraud and conspiracy case
- Lead Counsel in numerous bench and jury trials

- Numerous dissolution of marriage matters involving complex assets including businesses, deferred compensation, stock options, retirement assets, real estate, and pensions
